1. Review

To get things started I will review any existing crisis and emergency management, security or safety related policies or procedures you may have. I will also request you  send any site / building plans (diagrams) of your school.

2. Visit and Orientation

The school visit is an important part of the process. What I am looking to achieve here is to ground truth and orientate your site diagrams, locate emergency equipment and locations. I would also like to meet (briefly) with your nominated crisis team members.

3. Risk Assessment

The school's Risk Register will be created using a risk assessment process. This will be a collaborative process requiring frequent consultation (by telephone) with key school stakeholders. I will also consult with the police and other emergency responders in the region. The Risk Register will support key elements of the Crisis Management Plan.

4. Develop Crisis Management Plan

To support the development of the Crisis and Emergency Management Plan I will be in regular contact with a nominated liaison person tasked with supporting any information request I may have. Also, from time-to-time, I may ask for feedback on sections of the document. A quick turnaround is always helpful. I will create a first draft and conduct a page turn with the engagement manager (typically the Principal) before the final draft is ready for sign-off.

After sign-off the school will take responsibility of the Plan along with any changes or modifications going forward. As such, all documents and diagrams are created using  Microsoft Office suite (Word and Power Point).

5. Staff Training

Staff training on the new plan is critical and typically takes 1-2 hours (note: training can be conducted remotely if required). During the training session I will walk through the plan and take any questions. It is best to do the training when specialist equipment is on-hand and ready to use (i.e: radios, hard hats, Warned Stations etc).

6. Ongoing Advice and Guidance

Now that I’ve developed an understanding of the school I want to make sure your plan continues to work effectively. Feel free to call or email me with any ideas, changes or updates you have. Typically these will occur after any drills or actual emergency events.  I can also be engaged to coordinate emergency drills or training.
